Unfortunately, the president's rhetoric simply doesn't match his record when it comes to our nation's energy policies, and Americans are facing greater pain at the pump as a result. During the three years since the president took office, gas prices have doubled from $1.85 to $3.59 per gallon -- meeting his prediction that fuel prices would "necessarily skyrocket" under his administration's policies. With no end in sight, families and job creators in Missouri and nationwide are bracing for the prospect of paying $4 a gallon for gas by this summer. The Obama Administration’s hostility toward domestic energy production was most recently highlighted by the president's rejection of the shovel-ready Keystone XL pipeline project, which would have created 20,000 jobs and decreased our nation's reliance on foreign oil -- at no cost to taxpayers. More American energy means more American jobs. We need a comprehensive energy strategy that encourages more domestic oil production while utilizing all forms of American energy to help jumpstart private sector job creation and put our nation on a path to greater energy independence. I stand ready to work with President Obama on an “all-of-the-above” approach to the responsible development of more domestic energy in order to put more people back to work and bring down prices at the pump for families and businesses in Missouri and nationwide. As the deadline nears for health insurance companies to return nearly $1.4 billion to us for wasting our money, the lobbyists have moved in to stop it. 

Two bills have surfaced in Congress to undermine our rebates, putting most of the money we deserve right back into insurance company pockets! I just took action at Consumers Union’s website to fight the lobbyists, and hope you will join me.

One of the most pro-consumer rules in the national health reform law is aimed squarely at how insurance companies spend our money. If an insurance company spends more than 20 percent of our premium dollars on their paperwork, marketing and CEO salaries, we get a rebate, or lower rates.

The deadline for the first round of rebate checks is August 1. And it’s estimated insurers owe 9 million Americans nearly $1.4 billion! But these bills in Congress would undermine that. Please add your voice now to help us fight these bills. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the answer is pretty disappointing. With the passage of this costly $825 billion spending bill, President Obama promised that the nation’s unemployment rate would drop below 8 percent. But instead, Americans saw the jobless rate hold steady above 8 percent for 36 consecutive months – leaving nearly 13 million Americans out of work today. Meanwhile, we’ve watched our nation’s debt skyrocket to more than $15 trillion – saddling future generations with the burden of this administration’s reckless spending agenda. And it’s been well over 1,000 days since Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the Democrat-controlled Senate met their legal obligation to pass a budget. In fact, Senator Reid has already announced that he has no plans to vote on a federal budget this year. President Obama introduced his proposed budget this week – which includes the highest tax hike in American history and more of the same out-of-control spending policies that we’ve come to expect. Clearly, this wasn’t a serious proposal – it was a campaign document from a President worried about saving his own job – not creating jobs for more Americans. More spending. Higher unemployment. Record debt. That’s what we have to show for the Obama Economy and the so-called “stimulus” debacle.
