Subject: New Cuba Travel Regulations Announced by the White House

END THE TRAVEL BAN Dear Daniel, Thank you, Mr. President. After this summer’s buzzing rumors regarding some kind of White House action, the Obama Administration has today announced new regulations governing U.S. citizen travel to Cuba. It is a large step forward, and comes in the wake of a disappointing missed opportunity by the Congress to change the law. We congratulate the White House on their forward-looking decision. And we congratulate all of you for the hard and dedicated work you contributed to this achievement. Thank you, Cuba Advocates! Here’s what we understand new travel regulations will do (check out our blog on www.lawg.org next week for specifics and/or revisions): •    Expand purposeful travel by providing general licenses for religious, educational/academic, and cultural travel to Cuba; •    Provide specific licenses for people-to-people travel similar to the licenses that were provided from 1999-2003; •    Allow for non-family remittances of $500/quarter for private entrepreneurial activities, cultural activities, etc. – such remittances may not be provided to senior members of the Cuban government or members of the Communist Party; and •    Expand charter flights from the United States to include all U.S. international airports (i.e. all U.S. international airports may apply to have charter flights depart from their site). Last August, rumors circulated among major news sources, such as TIME Magazine, New York Times, Miami Herald, and Bloomberg News that expanding travel regulations to allow for people-to-people travel was on the horizon. The rumors have now been put to rest, and we can soon anticipate expanded travel opportunities once the regulations are published in the Federal Register (in a couple of weeks) and after a two-month comment period has been completed. We clearly see this announcement by the White House as very positive step in the right direction, and we look forward to a surge in travel to Cuba and a move to encourage the Congress to finish the job and actually change the law.  More contact between citizens from our two countries serves the interests of everyone. We should all take time to celebrate this action by the Obama Administration, and let’s begin making our travel plans! We hope that soon the Congress will see the wisdom of taking further steps to open travel to Cuba for ALL U.S. citizens. Dear Daniel: Thank you for expressing your thoughts regarding the EPA's use of the 1970 Clean Air Act to control greenhouse gas emissions.  I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns. Climate change is a hot topic in the scientific and political communities. It is increasingly important to the American people as well. As a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, I have participated in hearings on global warming, its causes and possible effects. Although not all members of the scientific community agree, there seems to be a growing consensus that the planet has experienced a general warming trend, estimated at just over one degree in the last hundred years. However, satellite data also indicates that temperatures at moderate altitudes have fallen since 1979. According to the National Academy of Science (NAS), there is considerable uncertainty as to whether human activities contribute significantly to global warming. While some believe increased levels of CO2 in our atmosphere are a major factor in planetary warming trends, others observe that the sun is the primary influence on our planet's temperature. They note that increases in solar luminosity have contributed to our global warming trend. Still others suggest that our planet has gone through many natural heating and cooling cycles over the last thousand years. In fact, recent evidence suggests that global warming may have slowed. 3,000 deep sea robots, deployed to study global warming trends have reported that oceanic temperatures appear to have dropped slightly, rather than risen, over the last five years. Debates and research are ongoing as to the causes, effects, and solutions for global warming. Although there is much more for us to learn, I believe that we cannot wait until we have all the answers to take common-sense steps to reduce CO2 emissions, especially when we can do so without harming our economic stability. We have a profound responsibility to protect our planet from avoidable environmental harm.   That is why I support research into carbon neutral technologies.  For example, I support the development of emission-free nuclear technology, hydrogen cell technology and other cutting-edge innovations.  But even with alternative technology there is some uncertainty as to our ability to significantly reduce global emissions, especially with increased emissions being produced by China, India and other developing countries. China is, in fact, the leading producer of carbon emissions globally. Under the banner of combating global warming, some politicians have proposed massive tax increases and tens of billions of dollars in unfunded mandates on states and private corporations.  Such legislation would increase household energy prices by 60-80% and cost millions of American jobs.  Domestic businesses would be forced to absorb a massive regulatory burden not imposed on similarly situated businesses in other countries, placing the United States at a severe economic disadvantage. Ultimately, I remain committed to a common-sense approach to global warming concerns, balancing economic and environmental outcomes. For that reason, I will not support policies that needlessly hamstringing America's economy with no guarantee of rolling back global warming trends. Giffords Shooting is an Attack on All of Us: NOW Calls on Right Wing to Disavow Violence and Hate Speech Statement of NOW President Terry O'Neill January 8, 2011 NOW condemns the tragic shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) that stole six lives and seriously injured 12 today. We condemn, equally, the culture of hate and violence increasingly reflected in extreme right-wing opponents of those who support progressive solutions to our country's challenges. Rep. Giffords, whose office was vandalized after she voted for the federal health care reform law last year, was also named on Sarah Palin's "Targeted" list. Giffords (who has been consistently endorsed by NOW's PAC) herself understood the not-so-well veiled threat, stating "the thing is that the way she [Palin] has it depicted, we're in the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they've got to realize that there are consequences to that action." The pious condemnations we are now hearing by right-wing leaders are of little comfort if not accompanied by concrete action. Conservatives cannot have it both ways, screaming sexist, racist and homophobic slurs at legislators as they vote for health care reform, putting legislators on a violence-inciting "Targets" list, and then simply saying how sorry they are when someone explodes into murder. In November 2009, as Democratic women spoke on the House floor about how the Affordable Care Act would benefit women, Republican Congressmen shouted them down. Led by Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), who repeatedly yelled "I object. I object. I object. I object. I object," as Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) tried to talk, they carried on this attack for half an hour. In March 2010, Tea Party supporters screamed a racial epithet at Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) as he walked toward Congress from a health care reform meeting. Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) was walking with Lewis and confirmed the protesters were yelling "Kill the bill, kill the bill," when they used the racial epithet. One man spit on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) as he walked to the Capitol. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was taunted with anti-gay epithets as he left the same meeting in a House office building. We call on Republican leaders to do more than disavow hatred, hostility and violence-laden speech as a political tool. We also call upon the Justice Department to investigate -- to the fullest extent of federal anti-terrorist legislation -- reports that this mass murder, which included the killing of a federal judge and the attempted assassination of a member of Congress, was part of a conspiracy. NOW offers our sincere condolences to the families of those who were slain, and we hope that all those who were injured will soon recover.
