Never again, Al Franken

Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 10:32:15 -0400

Al Franken - U.S. Senator, Minnesota
Dear Daniel,
When we passed health insurance reform, I told you how important it was that we passed student loan reform at the same time. That bill stopped giveaways to banks, and put the government on the side of consumers instead of massive financial institutions.
That's exactly what Wall Street Reform will do with all financial products.
Reform will strengthen consumer protections and hold Wall Street accountable for its actions. Specifically, the actions that nearly caused a global financial collapse. Minnesotans lost their retirement savings, 401Ks, and homes -- sometimes all three. It's time we hold these guys to account and fix the problem the financial crisis exposed so vividly. Wall Street, left to its devices by deregulation, will run amok with greed.
Never again.
When we pass this legislation, big banks will have to put money up front so if they fail, they pay for their own funerals. After what we saw in 2008, I'm of the opinion that there's no reason banks shouldn't be required to clean up the messes they create.
The Senate bill also stops financial institutions from selling dangerous or deceptive loans and mortgages that put family nest-eggs at risk just so banks can rack up profits. And we'll put in place common-sense consumer protection measures that will stop banks from gambling with other people's money and mortgages.
And finally, we're creating something I've been calling for since I opposed the very first bank bailout in 2008 -- a strong consumer watchdog agency with teeth to force big banks and credit card companies to offer clear and fair terms to families and to make sure they are treated fairly and not misled by bad actors on Wall Street.
I'm hopeful that once we begin debate (if Republicans ever decide to allow one) we will add more help for home owners who lost their jobs through no fault of their own and are struggling to stay in their homes.
Across the nation right now, Americans are standing up and demanding Wall Street be held to account and our system of regulations strengthened to ensure big banks can never put our economy at risk every again. I should know, I'm one of them.
Thanks for your support,
Al

Her last call was from a cell phone.....

Her last call was from a cell phone.....

SCROLL DOWN FOR PICTURES......

Sometimes only a picture can get our attention!

Her last call was from a new cell phone...

Do you see the motorcycle?

Now do you see it?

The Honda crotch rocket rider was traveling at approximately
85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she
pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the
motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient
enough to avoid this accident.
The car had two passengers
and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them.

The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact
and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.

All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were
killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at
the Motorcycle Fair by the Police and Road Safety Department..

Pass this on to car drivers or soon to be
new drivers, or new motorcycle owners

AND ESPECIALLY EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO HAS A CELL PHONE!!!!!

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Save a life

Stop talking on Cell phones and Texting while  trying to drive.

The life you save may be your own..... or mine...

Keep passing this on so everyone will see

what can happen by using a

 Cell phone while driving!!!

Whales petition growing -- wow!

Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2010 01:09:22 -0400
From: avaaz@avaaz.org
Subject: Whales petition growing -- wow!
Wow -- more than 400,000 of us signed the whales petition, the Whaling Commission confirmed we're getting through, and some countries now oppose lifting the ban! But many are on the fence -- forward the message below and let's get to 500,000!

-------

Dear friends,

A new proposal would lift the global ban on commercial whale hunting. Countries are deciding their positions on it now, so an outcry is needed -- sign to protect the ban and save the whales:

Take Action Now!
The International Whaling Commission has just unveiled a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.

Countries are now deciding their first responses -- and they're watching public reaction closely. New Zealand called its provisions -- which include a legal quota for hunting endangered fin whales -- "offensive," "unacceptable," and "inflammatory." But other key nations are rumoured to be leaning in support of it. They need to hear from us now.

Avaaz has launched an urgent petition to show our leaders their people want to protect whales, not hunt, kill, and sell them. Already, 400,000 people have signed -- and the petition is being sent to the International Whaling Commission each time it reaches another 100,000 signatures. Sign here and forward this message:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/whales_under_threat_5/?vl

A strong international consensus has opposed whaling for decades -- but for just as long, Japan, Norway, and Iceland have continued to hunt whales, ignoring the global ban on whaling or exploiting a loophole by claiming their expeditions were "scientific research." Now they could be rewarded by this "compromise" proposal, in which their commercial whaling would be made legal in exchange for unenforceable promises to slowly reduce their yearly catch.

Worse still, a number of other countries are watching the process closely in hopes of launching their own whaling programs. If Japan, Norway, and Iceland can hunt whales and sell their meat, others will ask "if them, why not us?"

It's time to save the whales -- again. The IWC proposal will be voted up or down by country delegates this June, but their positions are hardening fast -- let's respond massively, right away, everywhere. Click below and forward this message to oppose the legalization of commercial whale hunting:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/whales_under_threat_5/?vl

Forty years ago, whales were on the brink of extinction. But thanks to a global social movement, the world banned commercial whaling in 1986. The ban is one of the environmental movement's great triumphs.

Today, whales still face many threats: not just the whalers' harpoons, but also climate change, destruction of ecosystems by overfishing and pollution, and nets intended for other fish. A renewed wave of commercial whaling could devastate these extraordinarily intelligent and social cousins of humanity. This is no time to move backwards.

With hope,

Ben, Ricken, Paula, Iain, David, Luis, and the whole Avaaz team

This is exactly why we need to Change Congress

Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2010 15:02:58 +0000
From: info@change-congress.org
Subject: This is exactly why we need to Change Congress

Fix Congress First
Friend --

Scott Brown, Massachusetts' new senator, opposes legislation in Congress that would strengthen regulations for Wall Street.

But when a reporter recently asked him why he's against this bill, Brown couldn't give an answer. He's against financial reform, but he has no idea why.

Let me help Senator Brown: During his campaign last year, Brown received half of his campaign contributions from Wall Street and business executives. He benefited from another million dollars in issue ads by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. They oppose the bill, so Senator Brown opposes the bill. It's no wonder Pew recently found that trust in Congress is at its lowest point ever.

I focused on Scott Brown, but the influence of special interest money pervades both parties in both chambers. Americans are right to suspect that their representatives are merely doing the bidding of those funding their campaigns.

Last week, I recorded a new episode of the Change Congress Chronicles, talking about Scott Brown, the economy of influence in Washington, and the path to reform. Take a few minutes to watch, and then please share it with anyone you know who is fed up with our electoral system:

Watch the Change Congress Chronicles, Vol. 5

http://fixcongressfirst.org/ChronicleV

Congress can fix our campaign finance system right now by passing the Fair Elections Now Act, which would create an opt-in system of citizen-funded elections. But to get this bill written into law, we must build enough grassroots support so that Congress has no choice but to listen.

Whatever your party affiliation, whatever change you seek -- it won't happen until we Change Congress.

-- Lawrence Lessig

Dear Daniel:

Thank you for your correspondence regarding H.R. 39, the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, sponsored by Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA). It was good to hear from you and I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

As you may know, this measure designates specified lands within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) as wilderness and components of the National Wilderness Preservation System. This designation would permanently exclude the area from future energy exploration activities.

Representing you is a great privilege and I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind if I have the opportunity to address this or related legislation in the future.

I hope that you will not hesitate to contact me regarding any matter where I might be of assistance. You may visit my website to find more information on issues, subscribe to my e-newsletter or send me an email.

Sincerely,
Todd Akin
Member of Congress
