Dear Daniel, This is Sam's once-in-a-decade chance. The House Education and Labor Committee is beginning an overhaul of the nation's premier federal education law, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Will Congress finally include pre-k funding for our nation's youngest learners in this landmark law? Representative Akin will have a voice in this education reform effort. Please tell your lawmaker support the inclusion of pre-k in ESEA! High-quality pre-k is a proven and cost-effective school reform strategy, but the current law treats Sam's learning potential as an after-thought. Federal funding for pre-k has been largely ignored, and without leadership from Washington; 70 percent of three and four year olds don't have access to state funded pre-k programs. We know that pre-k puts kids on the path to success: improving cognitive, social, and emotional skills; decreasing the need for grade retention and special education services; and closing the achievement gap. A solid pre-k foundation is essential -- as Education Secretary Arne Duncan says, it's how we get our country out of the catch-up business. Tell Representative Akin that early education is a vital component of school reform. Ask your Congressperson to support the inclusion of pre-k in the reauthorization of ESEA. Thanks for making sure that our leaders in Washington don't leave our three and four year olds behind. Sincerely, Marci Young NoSchoolForSam.org This message was sent to Perez61@windstream.net.
